Markets take a dip

The benchmark Nifty closed at 17532 levels, down by approximately 1.74% for the week. The Sensex closed at 58765 levels, down by approximately 2.14% for the week.

Macro-economic developments

S&P Ratings retained India’s current fiscal growth estimates at 9.5% and highlighted a strong rebound in economic activity after the second wave of the pandemic waned.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) notified that the government would borrow INR 5.03 trillion in the H2FY22 to fund the revenue gap for reviving the economy. The gross market borrowing for FY22 is INR 12.05 trillion.

As per data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), the government's fiscal deficit stood at INR 4.68 lakh cr or 31.1% of the Budget estimates at the end of August.

According to RBI data, Indian companies' external commercial borrowings surged to over $2.84 bn in August 2021, compared with $145.74 mn in August 2020.

US real gross domestic product grew by 6.7% in the second quarter, compared to a 6.3% expansion seen in the first quarter.

The INR depreciated during the week to finally close at around 74.24 levels.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for November 2021 settlement traded flat to close the week at approximately USD 77.77/barrel.

The yield on 10-year benchmark Government Securities paper rose to 6.249%.

Institutional Activity

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) turned net sellers of Indian equities and net sold Indian equities worth approximately INR 5781.46 crore between 24th September 2021 and 30th September 2021. Correspondingly, DIIs continued buying and net bought India equities worth approximately INR 4402.63 crore, in the same time period.
